Preheat Like a Pro: Hotter Espresso, Smarter Battery Use

The NEO Pro heats water to 92°C all by itself — that is the whole point of a battery-powered machine. But here is what the spec sheet will not tell you: the air, your cup, and the machine's own metal parts all want a share of that heat. A few small habits separate a lukewarm, flat-tasting shot from a hot, sweet one — and they stretch your battery at the same time.

Tip 1: Let Heated 5-Stage Brew do the heating

Pour room-temperature or even cold water into the tank and run Heated 5-Stage Brew mode: the machine brings the water to 92°C, then runs the full five-stage extraction curve, Starting Curve preinfusion included. From cold water to finished cup takes about 2.5 minutes. Why not just pour in kettle-hot water? Two reasons: scalding water can overshoot the brew temperature and flatten delicate flavors, and the machine's heating profile is calibrated to land exactly on 92°C. Trust the mode — it is the whole reason the heater exists.

Tip 2: Preheat the cup, not just the water

Rinse your cup with hot water before you pull the shot — a splash from the kettle, or the first few milliliters of hot water from the machine itself. A 36-gram shot landing in a cold 120-gram ceramic cup can lose several degrees on contact, and temperature is flavor: a shot that tastes sour and thin is not always under-extracted, sometimes it is just served cold. This is the single cheapest upgrade in espresso, and it costs you ten seconds.

Tip 3: Warm the basket with the machine

Heat up with the empty 48mm basket locked in place. The basket is solid metal, and cold metal is a heat sink: your first shot of the day donates its temperature to the steel instead of staying in the cup. Baristas warming up portafilters on a cafe machine do exactly the same thing — here it just happens inside a 760-gram portable. One extra minute, noticeably hotter first shot.

Tip 4: Keep the battery warm in cold weather

Lithium batteries sulk in the cold. A full charge powers at least 3 heated shots at room temperature, but leave the machine in a freezing car and that number shrinks — cold cells simply cannot deliver their full current. In winter, keep the machine inside your bag or jacket rather than the trunk, and charge fully before heading out: 30W fast charging gets you back to 80% in about 40 minutes, so a top-up over breakfast is always an option.

Tip 5: Go unheated when you have hot water

Got a thermos of hot water? Switch to Unheated 5-Stage Brew: same five-stage extraction curve, zero heating drain, and the machine stretches to 200+ cups per charge instead of a handful. Heating is by far the battery's biggest expense — let the thermos pay it and save your charge for the days you truly need it.

None of this is complicated: use the right mode, warm the hardware, mind the cold. The NEO Pro already handles the hard part — a true 6–9 bar extraction at the puck, five stages, every time. Your job is just heat management, and now you know exactly where the heat goes.
