Pack a Full Café in Your Carry-On: A Barista's Travel Setup Checklist

Great espresso on the road isn't luck — it's packing. Here's the carry-on setup I recommend to anyone traveling with a PURA NEO Pro: a handful of kit, four habits, zero café FOMO.

Tip 1 — Pre-dose your shots at home

The NEO Pro's 48mm basket takes 16g. Weigh out one 16g dose per cup into small airtight vials or containers before you leave. Why: dose variance is the number-one cause of thin, sour travel shots, and nobody wants to babysit a scale in a hotel room. Pre-dosing turns your morning routine into three moves: pour, tamp, brew.

Tip 2 — Pack whole beans, grind as fresh as you can

We only sell whole bean, and this is exactly why: ground coffee starts losing aroma within hours. If you own a hand grinder, bring it — 16g takes about 30 seconds to grind. No grinder? Grind the morning you leave, seal it in a valve bag, and finish it within two or three days. Aim for a fine, table-salt texture: fine enough for the NEO Pro to build a true 6–9 bar at the puck, coarse enough that water still flows through the puck.

Tip 3 — Let the machine heat the water

The 120W boiler brings room-temperature water up to 92°C on battery power alone — cold water to finished cup in about 2.5 minutes. No kettle, no stove, no asking the hotel lobby for hot water. Just pour in clean bottled water and let Brew OS run the five-stage Starting Curve. Battery math for the road: a full charge heats at least 3 cups from cold water; pour in hot water instead and you'll get 200+ cups. So on long trips, grab hot water from the hotel kettle first, and save the battery for when you're truly off-grid.

Tip 4 — Carry a 60-second clean kit

One microfiber cloth and a small bottle for rinse water — that's the whole kit. While the basket is still warm, knock out the puck, rinse, wipe. The full routine in our 3-minute field reset guide takes three minutes; the travel version takes one. Coffee oils go rancid fast in a warm bag, and your tomorrow-morning shot will taste it.

Bonus — The cup question

A collapsible cup weighs nothing and fits anywhere. At 67 × 207mm and 760g, the NEO Pro itself rides in a jacket pocket or the side of a backpack — the cup is honestly the bulkiest thing left on this list.

That's the whole setup: dosed vials, whole beans, a water bottle, a cloth, a cup. Real 6–9 bar extraction at 92°C, five stages, anywhere you end up. Happy travels.
